Fredericksburg General District Court

Fredericksburg General District Court

Most adult criminal cases in the City of Fredericksburg begin in the Fredericksburg General District Court, though there are some exceptions. The courthouse is located at the following address:

701 Princess Anne Street
Fredericksburg, Virginia 22401

Most dockets are handled by the Honorable John R. Stevens, though on some days substitute judges preside.

The courthouse is on the corner of Princess Anne and Charlotte Streets, kitty-corner to the Wells Fargo bank.

Street parking is available, as is a parking garage at 600 Sophia Street (only a few blocks from the courthouse). I advise most clients to leave their phone in the car. Phones are not allowed in the courthouse and the Sheriff's staff will not watch your phone for you. You will have to pass through a metal detector and your belongings will be examined before you will be granted access to the building. The General District Court Clerk's Office and courtrooms are on the second floor.

No shorts or hats are allowed in the courtrooms. You may not put your hands in your pockets while you are before the court. Some matters are heard directly at the bench, while some are handled from the tables. The prosecutors sit on the left as you are facing the bench and typically you may not speak with them while court is in session.
